Haunted Nashville

Twanging guitars and honkey-tonk bars–Nashville is one city that comes alive as darkness falls! It’s also the capital of Tennessee, and a town steeped in history that’s both tragic and alive with creative energy. Strategically located on the Cumberland River, the settlement that became Nashville was used by the French as a trading port. As America won its independence, the town became deeply involved in the slave trade. Nashville seceded with Tennessee during the Civil War; however, the state (being politically divided) was the first re-admitted to the Union after being captured by the North.

While the dark forces of slavery tore at the fabric of the city, another energy fought to create a patchwork of community. The origins of Country music is hotly debated among true aficionados but there’s no doubt Nashville fought to preserve the sound. The Grand Ole Opry had its beginnings in 1925 as a radio station devoted to country music. With elements of Christian revivalism and southern rowdiness, the venue grew rapidly through the years. Today, the Opry– alongside the Country Music Hall of Fame– keeps the scene alive as well as chronicles its storied history. Nashville earned its nickname the “Music Capital of the World “ by jump starting the careers of Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Buck Owens and many others. Their spirits are said to linger outside the clubs and bars they once called home.
